A foreign-owned U.S. disregarded entity should enter the owner’s foreign taxpayer identification number if one exists. If the owner has no U.S. identifying number, a consistent filer-created reference ID may be required. Enter the owner’s complete residential or business address using the country’s normal components; do not substitute the LLC’s registered-agent address for the owner’s address.

Start an accountant-reviewed filing if identity fields are causing uncertainty.

What is an FTIN on Form 5472?

An FTIN is the taxpayer identification number issued by the owner’s country of tax administration. Examples include national tax numbers used on the owner’s local tax return. It is not the U.S. LLC’s EIN.

The IRS Instructions for Form 5472 state that a foreign-owned U.S. disregarded entity must enter an FTIN, if any, for each listed foreign owner. If the owner has no FTIN, the instructions permit “None” or “N/A.”

What is a Form 5472 reference ID?

A reference ID is an identifier created by or for the reporting LLC when a foreign owner or related party lacks a U.S. identifying number. The IRS does not issue it.

RulePractical action
Alphanumeric onlyUse letters and numbers
No spaces or special charactersAvoid hyphens, slashes, and punctuation
Maximum 50 charactersChoose a short durable format
Consistent every yearStore it in the permanent owner record
Never recycle itDo not assign an old ID to a new person

A durable example format is OWNER1COUNTRY2026. The exact characters are less important than consistency and uniqueness. Never embed a passport number or other sensitive identifier when a neutral internal code will work.

Which address belongs in each part of the form?

The LLC’s address identifies the reporting corporation. The owner’s address identifies the foreign shareholder or related party. Those addresses can differ.

Use the LLC’s actual mailing address in Part I based on the entity’s records. Use the owner’s complete foreign address in Part II and, when the owner is also the related party, Part III. Include street, city, province or state, postal code, and country where applicable.

The current Form 5472 provides separate fields for the reporting corporation and the foreign owner. A registered-agent address should not automatically be copied into the owner field.

What is the Form5472 Prep identity audit?

Before submission, compare:

  1. LLC legal name and EIN against the IRS EIN notice.
  2. LLC address against the current entity record.
  3. Owner legal name against foreign tax or identity records.
  4. FTIN against the owner’s local tax document.
  5. Reference ID against the prior-year Form 5472.
  6. Country fields against citizenship, organization, tax residence, and principal business activity.

The country questions are not interchangeable. “Country of citizenship,” “country of tax residence,” and “principal country where business is conducted” can have different answers.

How does Form5472 Prep handle owner identifiers?

The guided intake asks for LLC and owner identifiers separately, checks prior-year consistency, and produces the completed Form 5472 plus pro forma Form 1120. The $149 Standard plan includes accountant review, fax delivery to the IRS, and a timestamped receipt, ready in 5-7 business days; Express delivers the same package in 3 business days for $199.

Frequently asked questions

What if my country does not issue an FTIN?

The IRS instructions allow “None” or “N/A” for a foreign-owned U.S. disregarded entity when the owner has no FTIN.

Is the reference ID the LLC’s EIN?

No. The EIN identifies the U.S. LLC. A reference ID identifies a foreign owner or related party that lacks a U.S. identifying number.

Can I change the reference ID next year?

Use the same reference ID every year for the same person. If a change is unavoidable, follow the IRS correlation rules for old and new IDs.

Can I use the registered-agent address for the owner?

Not merely for convenience. Enter the address that actually identifies the foreign owner; the LLC’s address belongs in the reporting-corporation section.

The bottom line

Treat each identifier as belonging to a specific person or entity: EIN for the LLC, FTIN for the foreign owner, and a consistent reference ID when required. Have Form5472 Prep check and file the package.
