You do not need an ITIN to request an extension of time to file a federal individual income tax return or to make an estimated tax payment. Use the applicable paper form or payment voucher, write “ITIN TO BE REQUESTED” where it asks for an SSN or ITIN, and do not attach Form W-7. An extension gives you more time to file; it does not give you more time to pay tax due.

This matters when a nonresident may need a personal U.S. return but cannot assemble the W-7 package before the filing deadline.

Which action should you take before an ITIN exists?

Keep the extension, payment, and ITIN application in separate lanes.

The IRS ITIN page provides the first two procedures. The Instructions for Form W-7 govern the later application package.

How do you request a federal extension without an ITIN?

Complete and mail Form 4868 by the due date that applies to your return. In each field requesting the missing SSN or ITIN, write ITIN TO BE REQUESTED. Do not include Form W-7 with the extension request. The IRS gives these exact steps under “Apply for an extension without an ITIN”.

Form 4868 covers several individual return types, including Form 1040-NR. The applicable original deadline can differ by return and filer, so use the current form instructions rather than assuming every nonresident has the same April deadline.

The extension addresses filing time only. The Form 4868 instructions require an estimate of total tax liability and warn that unpaid tax can accrue interest and may incur penalties. Obtain qualified tax advice if you cannot determine whether a return or payment is required.

How do you make an estimated payment without an ITIN?

The IRS says income without sufficient withholding, including self-employment income, may require estimated payments. A missing ITIN does not remove that possibility.

For the no-ITIN procedure described by the IRS:

  1. Use the current Form 1040-ES or Form 1040-ES (NR) estimated-tax payment voucher.
  2. Write ITIN TO BE REQUESTED in the voucher field for an SSN or ITIN.
  3. Mail the voucher and check or money order to the address listed in the current form.
  4. Keep a copy of the voucher and proof of payment with the later W-7 and return records.
  5. Do not attach Form W-7 to Form 1040-ES.

These steps are the paper procedure on the IRS ITIN page. They do not establish the amount due or guarantee matching without follow-up. Use the current form-year instructions.

When should Form W-7 be submitted?

Form W-7 normally belongs with the return for which the ITIN is needed. A first-time applicant attaches W-7 to the front of the original return and leaves the applicant's SSN area blank. A qualifying exception applicant follows that exception's evidence rules instead.

If the package cannot be completed by the original due date, request an extension by that date. When ready, send it through an approved ITIN route—not the ordinary Form 1040-NR address.

An extension does not create a federal tax purpose for an ITIN. You still must be ineligible for an SSN and have a supported W-7 reason. Owning a U.S. LLC or needing the LLC's EIN is not, by itself, a personal ITIN reason.

What can Form5472 Prep handle?

Form5472 Prep can prepare a new or renewal W-7 package and arrange permitted identity-document verification through an IRS-authorized Certifying Acceptance Agent. For an adult using eligible passport evidence, that avoids mailing the original passport.

The service does not prepare Form 4868, calculate tax, decide whether Form 1040-NR is required, or guarantee approval or payment matching. Complete those decisions separately, then review the ITIN application service if a supported federal tax purpose exists.

Frequently asked questions

Can I e-file Form 4868 without an ITIN?

The IRS's specific no-ITIN procedure says to complete and mail Form 4868 with “ITIN TO BE REQUESTED” in the SSN or ITIN fields. Electronic providers may require a numeric TIN, so do not assume an e-file workflow will accept the phrase. Follow the current IRS paper instructions when no number exists.

Should I attach Form W-7 to my extension or estimated payment?

No. The IRS explicitly says not to include Form W-7 with Form 4868 or Form 1040-ES. Submit W-7 later with the qualifying federal return, unless you meet a listed exception to the return-attachment rule.

Does Form 4868 extend the deadline to pay tax?

No. It extends the time to file the return, not the time to pay. Estimate and pay any amount due by the applicable payment deadline to limit possible interest and penalties.
