The IRS says to allow seven weeks for an ITIN application status notice. It can take nine to eleven weeks during tax season—January 15 through April 30—or when the application is submitted from overseas. As of September 3, 2026, the IRS operations page said it was processing Forms W-7 received in July 2026.
Those timeframes begin when the IRS receives a complete package, not when you start collecting documents. Start with a prepared Form W-7 and CAA certification if you want to reduce avoidable pre-submission errors without mailing your original passport.
The ITIN timeline has three separate stages
Treating every day as “IRS processing” makes the wait hard to diagnose. Separate the timeline:
| Stage | Who controls it | What can extend it |
|---|---|---|
| Application preparation | Applicant and preparer | Missing federal purpose, return, exception evidence, or identity documents |
| Delivery to the ITIN Unit | Sender and carrier | International transit, address errors, or no tracking |
| IRS processing | IRS | Peak season, overseas volume, document review, errors, or additional-information requests |
The published seven- or nine-to-eleven-week window is the third stage. Add preparation and shipping time when planning around a tax return or transaction.
What does the IRS processing-status page mean?
The IRS processing-status page reports the receipt month currently being worked for Form W-7. On September 3, 2026, it displayed July 2026. That is a dated operational snapshot, not an approval forecast for a particular applicant.
Your file may move faster or slower because the page does not show whether it requires error correction, exception review, document validation, or correspondence. Check the page again before publication or before making a time-sensitive decision; the receipt month changes as the queue advances.
When should you check your ITIN status?
The IRS ITIN page says to contact the IRS if no notice arrives within the applicable timeframe. Before calling, have:
- the applicant’s full legal name;
- mailing address used on Form W-7;
- date the package was delivered;
- carrier tracking or other proof of receipt;
- a copy of the signed Form W-7;
- the attached return or exception category; and
- any IRS notice already received.
Do not send a duplicate W-7 simply because the application is still inside the normal window. A second package can create confusion rather than speed.
Five common causes of avoidable delay
- No valid federal tax purpose. An ITIN is not issued solely for banking, ecommerce, or general identification.
- Missing tax return or exception evidence. Most new applications include a U.S. federal return unless a specific exception applies.
- Inconsistent personal information. Names, dates, citizenship, passport information, and addresses must align across the W-7 and evidence.
- Unacceptable or expired documents. The IRS applies document-specific currency, photo, and dependent-residency rules.
- Unreachable mailing address. The IRS sends the assignment or rejection notice to the address on the application.
The current Form W-7 instructions are the source of truth for the package. A CAA can help identify completeness problems before submission, but no preparer can control the IRS queue.
Does using a CAA make the IRS faster?
CAA service is mainly about authentication, correct assembly, and document control. It should not be sold as paid priority processing. The IRS uses the same ITIN operation to decide the application.
Form5472 Prep’s $349 service prepares Form W-7 and uses CAA certification so the original passport is not mailed to the IRS. That removes a document-return concern and can reduce preventable package errors, while the actual assignment timeline remains the IRS’s responsibility.
Plan backward from the real deadline
If the ITIN will appear on a U.S. return, do not treat the filing date as the day to begin. Allow time to confirm eligibility, prepare the return, complete CAA authentication, send the package, and wait through the published IRS window. If the return deadline is close, consult the return instructions or a qualified tax adviser about filing and extension options; an ITIN application does not automatically extend a return.
Start the ITIN application for Form W-7 preparation and CAA certification. The flat fee is $349, and your original passport stays with you.
